Week 2

Second lecture (17th September 2013)

It time to get serious

This is the second week for this semester and today the lecture is cover for two topics which is the nature of strategic management and the business vision and mission.


            First, the nature of strategic management is about the introduction of strategic management. Strategic management can be describing as the art and science of formulating, implementing and evaluating cross-functional. The example of cross-functional is human resource department, financial department, EPS and others. The different between strategic management and planning is planning only about strategy formulation not include implementing and evaluating cross-functional.

In addition to that, chapter two is about the business vision and mission. A vision statement should answer the fundamental question, ‘’what do we want to become?’’. Vision is also can be said as our own objective that we want to achieve. Meanwhile, mission is synonymous with the question ‘’what is our business?’’ and it is as the tools that assist get the vision. There are many names for mission such as a statement of philosophy and others.


After deep thinking I can say that my vision come to USIM is to practice and accustom myself with 2 different flows which are Islamic and conventional. Meanwhile my mission to achieve the vision is I ought to learning as much as possible knowledge and guidance to prepare myself to face the reality global.


Week 1

First lecture (10th september 2013)

First and foremost

Today is the first day in this semester I start the class at 8am. This class is for subject STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT and COURSE CODE is MGB4013.  My schedule is pack at Tuesday because class start at 8 am until 10 pm. Thus, it will be a hectic day for me.

            As usual for the first lecture, the lecturer would brief to the entire student about course outline, assessment, final exam, book that will use and an introduction about the subject. My lecturer’s name is DR. UMMI SALWA AHMAD BUSTAMAM and the tutor would be PUAN SITI NURUL HUDA NORDIN.

Moreover, the Continuous Assessment is 60% and would consist of Teamwork assignment, Individual assignment, Participation (tutorial + case study), online forum, online quiz, Peer-review and Presentation. The final exam is 40%. The main reference book is David, F.R. (2013). Strategic management: Concepts and cases. 14th edition. Pearson. Miss Ummi also enquires us to read more article and news about business from any source like the star, news strait time and others.


After that we were ask to form ten groups and a group consist of 15 people. Hence, we were order to build tower from newspaper and the newspaper is provide by the lecturer. All we have to do is to build the tower based on our own material and creativity. We were free to use any kind of material such as stapler, glue, tape and so on. All of us were given 10 minutes to finish the tower and the evaluation was to find both the highest and the strongest tower.

 

Actually all this is story by my dearly friend to me because I cannot attend the first lecturer. That time I still at my faraway hometown at Kelantan. I had to postpone my depart to USIM due to unresolved matter.
